Australia day medal recognises firefighting efforts across the country

'He was a very loyal and loving person and he's had a big impact on all of us.'

Mrs Wilson added: 'He's in a very fortunate situation and we miss him terribly.

'His sister was one of the first responders and they were in the thick of it when it all happened, just like us, they were just at a loss for what to do.

'We can't imagine him without that man. He's truly a hero.'

Firefighters in Glasgow are offering a 10-hour reward in memory of Mr Wilson after the fire.

More than 100 firefighters are supporting the family in their search for the missing man.

An appeal has also been launched for anyone with information on the identity of the father of Mr Wilson.

This morning firefighters continued their efforts to fight the blaze after the man's body was spotted lying under the road overnight.

Government urged to abandon dead pokies trial

On a Monday morning, before a packed meeting of the Public Security and Justice Committee on the eve of the committee's third session, deputy prime minister Tehmina Zuma called for the abolition of a pokie trial that has emerged as a controversial tool of corruption prosecutions.

"Let it pass that there is no doubt that there was a lot of money on it," said Zuma, who added that police officers involved in the probe are being given a free pass "because we cannot believe that they are criminals, just money gamblers".

A separate report on Thursday morning said police are trying to pin the blame for corruption on the pokies' creators - the then chief justice, Kgalema Motlanthe.

At the meeting on Wednesday, the panel recommended the launch of a full and independent inquiry into the deaths of police officers.

According to documents released on Wednesday, police investigators said they found a sum in excess of $4 million in gold bars belonging to the dead officers. But the committee on Tuesday voted unanimously to set up a public inquiry into the money that is believed to have been spent for the services of the dead officers.

However, the committee on Thursday said the money spent on the pokies was more than enough to be investigated by "an independent police body which will seek to find out if it is possible to prove that the deceased officers were in fact innocent".

If the allegations turn out to be true, it will mean that the inquiry will have to wait until January 6 for a final report from the panel.

Wisemanama says the committee has been set up for a reason. "The president must know that the country needs justice, not corruption. We need to put the right authorities in place to handle corruption. I have a long list of complaints against the Gupta family members that need to be addressed. What I would like to see is the creation of an independent public investigation commission."

If there is an investigation, it will likely be conducted by the country's independent auditorium, which Wigunde describes as "very much" corrupt.

Zuma, like his predecessor, wants to know who was behind the actions of the Gupta family, which are being probed by the PSC committee as part of a wider investigation into corruption in various state institutions, which has already been opened by the High Court.

But he doesn't think the inquiry committee will be able to prove that they were guilty of corruption.

"As long as the people, the families, continue to say it was the people that were involved in corruption, it can't be investigated," said Zuma.

The committee'
