Eylx Clergy Gather For Sunday Of Orthodoxy Vespers Navajo scholar and historian Dr. Jennifer Denetdale looks deeper into Din茅 history to bring matriarchal leadership to the surface. Courtesy/NHSNHS News:CH ;HOOTSOO, DINTAH, WINDOW ROCK, NAVAJO NATION ?Navajo historian Dr. Jennifer Denetdale rewrites Din茅 history to include the overlooked leadership roles of Din茅 women.聽To her credit, Dr. Denetdale is a prof stanley cup essor of American Studies at the University of New Mexico UNM , the Director of UNMs Institute for stanley cup American Indian Research, and the Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission Chair. Shes also the first Dine person to have earned a Ph.D. in History.聽In 2007, she authored Reclaiming Din茅 History: The Legacies of Chief Manuelito and Juanita, a book that includes an exploration of the historical leadership roles of Din茅 women.聽For Denetdale, matriarchal leadership roles were rendered invisible when the federal government imposed a patriarchal form of government onto the Din茅. To Indigenous women and stanley tumblers to Din茅 women, the meaning of leadership is very expansive. It includes the responsibility to dictate land use and to care for our mother, the earth, Denetdale said. For Din茅, our traditional values influence how we view our women and how they take on roles that are reflective of the first mother of the Din茅, which is Asdz Ndleeh茅 Changing Woman . Denetdale realized that historical interpretations of Din茅 leadership were filtered through the American patriarchal structure of government forced upon the Din茅.
